While, technically, not about Cappadocia or Asia Minor, I was sent this link on one of my SCA lists. It links to a page which links to a 1913 tome entitled <i>Seven Centuries of Italian Lace</i>, published in 1913 and fully illustrated. Probably totally irrelevant and useless, but still pretty cool.

Since I think my link might have gotten stripped on the response to the side-story question earlier:
I'm doing NaNo again this year. So far so good...I'm only a day (or so) behind where I'm supposed to be, but I'm also on a pace that would put me about 12k ahead of what I did last year. My NaNo page is here: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/user%252F128387 |

Ivan - have you ever played C&S? I've got the 3rd ed. rules that I've had for years and years (in fact, that's how I get the heights & weights for my characters), but I've only ever known one other person who'd ever even heard of it. Looks like it would be a good game.

Some interesting grogs here...I may promote Hakim Ibrahim to a Companion though.
I love the cook, Ray. I bet his mother was cook before him, and possibly his grandmother before her. In 75 years they've had an opportunity to have a few. We need some more Greeks among the grogs. The Seljuks have been in Cappadocia for about 25 years, but there's still a lot of Byzantine Greeks floating around...

Nasty piece of kit, reliably killing things with no MR up to size 2, with a pretty good chance of death/incapacitation at size 3 and 4. It is too late to open the ring for enchantments, as the item is not a talisman. Still, another 11 pawns of effects is not to be sniffed at.

Went through and, as I was adding a *lot* of new books, reorganized the library format a bit. The library is now organized Arts first, then Abilities; Summae then Tractati, alphabetically by topic (except in the Arts section Techniques are before Forms); then by Level and Quality low to high.
When I get done putting everything in my spreadsheet, I'll post how many points we have in the library etc. so far.

Does the covenant have a policy in place for determing who gets to borrow a library text in case two (or more) magi need to study the text in any given season? e.g. if both Peregrine and Domazhir both want to study from "Ignis et Glacies: Fabricatio et Exitium de Ignem" over the winter.
Is it first come-first serve (i.e. whoever posts they're borrowing the bok first gets it)? Is it whomever used it more recently gets put in a lower priority? Do we have a Librarian who arbitrarily decides these things?

By my reckoning, we have 385 Build Points in the library so far (including the three I just added). Of the 1250 Build Points we have to work with for the covenant, about how many do we want to put in the library?
I'm thinking we might want to set aside some points for vis stores also (since it's 1 point per 5 pawns, I'm thinking 20 pts should be adequate...that's about 100 pawns in the stores).

Just some numbers to throw into the pot. Basically ran a series of random numbers based on number of spells for each form & technique, heavily weighted for the types of vis for which we have sources (Perdo, Animal, Terram, and Vim). Although the randomness shows fewer Vim than I expected, that actually makes sense as Vim would be the most in demiand (e.g. for making magic items, etc)
Feel free to change things around. 100 pawns of vis goes for 20 Build Points.

Library (see list on library page): 420
Cash (L100): 10 Vis Stocks (100): 20 Vis Sources (see list on vis sources page): 140 Total: 590 More books and Lab Texts? Lots more Lab Texts I think. More Vis Sources? I think so. Do labs need to be factored in? Domazhir's costs 80 (including the Tireless Servant) Magic Devices? Experts? Do we want an Autocrat? Does anyone want to take that as their companion? Ivan

Okay, added a magic item that could be used in the Meeting Room. (First time designing a magic item under 5th Ed. rules, I think I did it right).
Note that there is stil plenty of room vis-wise to put other magical effects in that bad boy. More power! *grunt grunt grunt*

Not quite sure what we mean by "proposed" volumes. Are those volumes that we would like to have in the Library, or ones that a new character is planning to bring with him/her?

Who in the covenant can teach one to read Greek (since it uses a different alphabet than Latin) and what would they expect in return? (I'm assuming that the "learning Greek/Turkish by exposure" wouldn't include literacy - I may be wrong)

Mailing list I'm on had a thing about reading stones: (quoting herein)
Reading stones--hemispherical pieces of of beryl, glass, or quartz that, when laid upon the page, magnify text and images--were in popular use in Western Europe beginning some time between 1000 and 1250 C.E. and at least until spectacles became widely available. They were especially useful for near-sighted readers and for people who spent long hours pouring over tiny script, and were often found in a scribe's tool box. You can see three photos of reading stones on the Antique Spectacles and Other Vision Aids site. One is of a reproduction in the collection of the Zeiss Optical Museum <http://www.antiquespectacles.com/history/reading_stone.htm>. The source of the others <http://www.antiquespectacles.com/statements/1600.htm> isn't specified. The second link has a quote attributed to Roger Bacon on the subject to 1268...not too terribly long after our period, and it certainly stands to reason that these would be part of a magi's toolbox.

Would Peregrine be entitled to his guards and servant when he's accepted as a "probationary" member of the covenant, or would that have to wait until his seven seasons have passed?
